*** Shopping-Tip: J.crew
J.Crew is a men's and women's clothing and accessories company in the
United States. J.Crew was founded in
1983 with the launch of its catalog and expanded into brick and mortar retailing in
1989 with its flagship store in
New York City. It has since become an American brand known worldwide for its collections of classic clothes and accessories to live, work, play and get married in. The company sells clothing designed to somewhat imitate (at lower prices) clothiers that traditionally catered to
"preppies", such as
Brooks Brothers and
J. Press.
Currently J.Crew's catalog has a circulation of over 80 million, and there are 157 retail stores and 43 factory stores with more openings planned in 2005 and 2006. Their website JCrew.com was launched in
1996 and allows buyers to browse both J.Crew's online only offerings, and normal catalog and retail offerings. While lacking a retail presence outside of the
USA, J.Crew's website offers shipping to
Canada and
Japan.
In September 2005 J.Crew came under fire from
PETA and other animal rights groups when it was revealed that J.Crew intended to begin carrying fur in the fall of 2005. The dispute was resolved when J.Crew canceled its fur production plans. [http://money.cnn.com/2005/11/30/news/midcaps/jcrew.reut/]
IPO
J.Crew, which is owned by private equity giant
Texas Pacific Group, initially announced plans for an
IPO in mid-2005.
The company has since pushed the date
to some time in early 2006. The company plans to be listed on the
NYSE under the stock ticker
'JCG. CEO Millard Drexler, veteran CEO of
Gap Inc., will control 15% of the company following its initial public offering.
